PAHO is the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for the Americas. At its Washington, DC headquarters, health officials from the 44 countries and territories that take part in PAHO meet to discuss public health policy, with interpretation and live broadcasts carrying the discussion beyond the meeting room.

The brief

The project renewed PAHO’s principal meeting spaces: Room A, a circular UN-style chamber; Rooms B and C; and reconfigurable Room 1017. Across Rooms A, B and C, meetings can generate up to 16 simultaneous live streams, with English, Spanish, French and Portuguese interpretation plus floor audio. Sessions run for eight to ten hours, making camera automation and coordinated video production central to the design.

Televic interpretation and automatic camera positioning

Televic conference systems combine delegate microphones, interpreter consoles and infrared language distribution. Pressing a delegate unit’s push-to-talk button automatically moves the camera to that speaker’s position. Room 1017 uses a Televic wireless conference system so its movable furniture can be arranged for different meetings.

Analog Way production for NanoLumens LED walls

Analog Way Aquilon C and C+ processors with an RC400T controller feed the NanoLumens direct view LED walls. The walls in one of PAHO’s conference rooms include curved displays. Analog Way coordinates video from the meeting floor with the content shown to delegates.

Crestron DM NVX across the meeting rooms

Crestron DM NVX carries video between sources and displays across the conference installation. Together, Televic, DM NVX and Analog Way automate production so a small team can run the building’s meetings. Panasonic PTZ cameras provide room coverage, while Cisco Webex conferencing connects remote participants.

The result

PAHO can hold simultaneous multilingual meetings while cameras follow the active speaker automatically and a small crew manages the broadcasts. The installation ran through 2023 and early 2024, following the main conference room’s inauguration during the September 2023 Directing Council meeting. ITI continues to staff every PAHO event today.
